Motor Rewinding

As those who follow other threads on HobbyTalk already know, this season’s first big oval controversy is over the rewinding of motors. It’s reported that some aftermarket tuners and individual racers are rewinding their spec motors to reduce the length of wire used to get the required number of turns. We would like to believe that BRL racers respect the rules and each other enough that this practice doesn't exist at our events. However, we felt it would be prudent to be sure everyone understands the BRL's position.

We want to make it absolutely clear that rewinding of motors is against BRL rules. Section 9.7 makes this clear when it states: “Motors may NOT have any material removed from the can, endbell, coil winding stacks, or any other motor component. This includes the aluminum "Center Band" if so equipped. No modifications other than those specifically addressed in these rules are permitted.” Removing the winding or any length of that winding is clearly removing material. Rewinding with new wire is clearly a modification that is not specifically permitted elsewhere in the rules.

We will acknowledge that policing this rewinding is a challenge. But we’re committed to doing everything possible to assure those who race in the BRL that they are competing on a level playing field and that everyone is running production motors as intended by the rules.

In order to accomplish this we will be taking the following actions:

1) At the remaining 3 races we will pre-tech motors. Racers are asked to bring their motors to pre-race tech beginning on Friday night. Motors should be presented for inspection while at room temperature.

2) We will be instituting an organizer’s claim rule. The BRL (and only the BRL, not other competitors) will have the right to claim (for $90) any motor which is deemed either suspicious or illegal at technical inspection. A competitor’s entry into the event will constitute his acceptance of the BRL’s rules and our right to claim his motor. Any competitor refusing to surrender his motor when claimed by the BRL will be banned from BRL competition for the balance of the calendar year or the remainder of the season whichever is longer.

3) Racers must use motors which have been approved at pre-race tech for all competition (qualifiers and mains) during a BRL weekend. Any racer using a motor other than one approved at pre-race tech or tampering with a motor in any manner other than adjusting timing (on those motors with adjustable timing) after it has been approved at pre-race tech, will be disqualified from the event, assessed a 400 point penalty and be banned from BRL competition for the balance of the calendar year or the remainder of the season whichever is longer.

4) Racers who find it necessary to replace rotors, bearings or other allowable alterations under BRL rules after their motor has been approved at pre-race tech may resubmit that motor for re-inspection and re-approval without incurring any penalty.

These penalties are admittedly severe and hopefully will discourage anyone from cheating. Racers using motors which are as produced by the manufacturer will have no problem passing pre-race tech. Racers using motors which have been “massaged” by aftermarket tuning companies or individuals should check with their supplier to be certain that their motors have not been rewound or otherwise tampered with in a manner contrary to the BRL rules.

Great job, Chuck!

I'm a firm believer in accountability. I'm willing to bet that for every cheater you ban, BRL will gain 2 to 3 new racers who know that they can compete and have fun.

Thank God ... we sure don't need this kind of stuff going on. I've been suspicious of some of these aftermarket motors and "tuners".

Thanks for keeping an eye on this !

Jessica and Holly doing tech?
They'd be lined up around the block making sure they were legal.

I'd take my penalties like a man. Like an old, graying, overweight, married man.
