8th Mercury Astronaut Bill Dana died

Dana gained fame as Bill the created and star as the character"Jose Jimenez" has passed away.

He was born William Szathmary on Oct. 5, 1924, in Quincy, Mass. His older Brother Irving was the composer who wrote the theme to Get Smart.

His list of accomplishments is long and varied.
Dana as a writer came up with Don Adams catch phrase "Would you believe . .." , and it was Dana's NBC show where Adams came aboard as hotel detective Byron Glick in the second season, the same character Adams would rename Maxwell and use on Get Smart.

He wrote one of the funniest episodes in All in the Family history - the one which Sammy Davis Jr. plants a kiss on Archie Bunker.

He opened the window as Jose during a Bat Wall Climb on the 60's Batman.

Strangely during the run of the Garry Moore variety program, Dana appeared as Jose the Astronaut, he then recorded an album with that material from a live show and sent a test pressing of the disc to the original seven Mercury astronauts - and they loved it.
Alan Shepard took the code name "Jose," and Jimenez became the astronauts' "mascot" which would lead years later, to him being inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame. That lead to Footage of him as Astronaut Jimenez on The Ed Sullivan Show to be used in the 1983 film The Right Stuff.

Other things he did include owning an advertising agency with Adams and D.W. Silverstein who represented the International House of Pancakes, and was the head of a management company that represented Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass .
Richard Baker and Steve H like this.
