Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes: Introduction - Die Cast Forum Restructure Planning

Verticle Scope has asked KITT and I for input on changes and/or improvements that can be made in the Die Cast Forum here at HobbyTalk.

To that end, input from membership was taken from their previous posts, issues, and 'why dont we' threads and presented to 3 individual work groups. These workgroups included members from the Collecting, International and Vintage sub forums. These 3 groups where then combined into one larger group to organize that information into an input poll. The poll is for other members to voice their interest in or support for those listed changes.

We are limited to 20 items in each poll thread - so there are 3 polls coming. Each will be a multiple-choice format. Part 1, starts with 4 questions. Here you can cast your vote for best changes, top changes, no changes or the I like pie option to show your nuetral/disinterested position. If you do vote for best or top choices - then we ask you to also review and vote for the individual changes in the rest of Part 1 and in Part 2 and 3 as well for the best option in that area.

The goal here is to maintain the predominantly diecast cars membership interest base and focus of the current forum, but expand the potential membership base - overall - to include other vehicle types of diecast. Either as new sections or as a new sub forum in the current die cast forum. That is addressed in questions 5, 6 and 7 of part 1. The rest of the questions in Part 1, 2 and 3 of the polls - address moving or merging current sub forums into other sections, renaming sections or adding new sections.

The idea behind this would be to expand the diecast section to include aviation, buses, cars, construction, emergency vehicles, military, motorcycles, spacecraft and trucks. The Cars section would include essentially everything that is already there. Hopefully; this would also generate new interest and traffic to the site and increased potential sponsership sections. Each of these new sections would include 5 sub forums to start with - (Aviation) Diecast Collecting; (Aviation) Diecast Customs; (Aviation) Diecast Dioramas; (Aviation) Diecast Events & Shows, (Aviation) Diecast Auctions, Buy, Sell & Trade. The car section would include all those currently in place or as revised per member input.

Any existing links, subscriptions, or notifications in place will automatically mesh with changes made in the end by Verticle Scope.

VS_Adm will make the final decision on any changes this process generates.

We want you to view this oppurtunity to provide input on the future look of the die cast section of HobbyTalk. This will be a way to provide a broader scope of interest in the boards for current members. And a more archival/grouping of common threads intended to improve the visitor and member topic searches and the reading/viewing experince for everyone.

In the near 20 years that I have been posting on toy car message boards,
this by far appears to be the most complex and complicated system to date.
Personally Im lost in the sea of choices and entirely overwhelmed with the
potential gigantic changes in store. More power to those who can navigate.

Cheers

Most everyone is only concerned with the diecast cars. That will essentially be the same but more up to date with what people are posting about today.

The other changes will be around other types of diecast vehicles and is for a new HobbyTalk audience.

These are changes that should have been addressed years ago, but got lost in the time period we were being ignored by the then owners and lack of interaction with membership by moderation.

Everything you like about HobbyTalk will still be there in the end.

Bear with the process - Verticle Scope wants to do it in a single pass if we can manage it.

In those 20 years - how often has the membership been asked to participate in the change over?

Umm...what?

I couldn't even wade through that whole thing.

Sure, a couple obvious forums could be moved, but that's about it.
But all these polls seem way overly complicated to me.

I appreciate your dedication and interest, and being asked my opinion.
Maybe the final outcome would be ok,
but we all seem to find it quite easy to find an appropriate page to stick in the occasional plane, boat, bus, new sneakers, fuzzy dice, and empty lolly-pop wrappers.

I think Hobby Talk's diecast section is THE best place in all of hyper-uber-space-web-land.
Doesn't it already have more members than any other?

Your vote would easily go into the no changes slot in part 1 question 3 then - and you are done with this process.

As I said above though, the diecast cars section will not change that much. Just be better organized and easier to search and find common thread topics. This process should also bring it more up to date with the current brand collecting and posting interests found throughout the total diecast forums.

Like you mention, there are those occasional posts about other types of diecast vehicles by current diecast car members. About 5% overall. Vertical Scope is looking to increase the amount of members who would post in new sections of diecast vehicles other than cars. You and others can still post your occasional posts, but there would be a dedicated forum to put them in - in the future.

I think you are right about membership being the largest. It is certainly the most diverse forum out there. But you might be including those members who only post in models, slot cars or rc only and not just diecast. The diecast number of posters may still be the biggest out there. I just havent found a way to break that out of the backroom data to just diecast.

Along that train of thought though - remember that Verticle Scope is an all types of vehicles oriented company - not just cars. And HobbyTalk is an all inclusive forum for more than just diecast cars. This process will better intergrate the VS business listings with the various hobby interests already found here and the new ones proposed for HobbyTalk.

Good to see you found some areas that are in your wheel house in part 3.

Its the same now as it was 20 years ago. Opinions were asked although
at the end of the day it always boils down to the bottom line money.

I get it although I dont have to like it.

Carry on

Absolutely! VS has assured us they have no intention of ever selling HobbyTalk again. But, improving the number of memberships and thus traffic to the site can maybe help further ensure that the diecast section of HobbyTalk will continie to have a place to call home.

Lets not kid ourselves, we all know that promise is not worth the paper its not written on.

Remember money is the bottom line so anything goes in big business and this site could easily be sold and revamped.

That said, how noble to spend a huge portion of your personal time for free making
all of these changes. Seems like I recently read somewhere that folks do not like
major changes on toy car message boards and in many cases it drives them away.

Au contraire! That promise not to sell is written down in no less than three different places so far. I am not naive enough to beleive that it wont ever happen, but I do believe their position and intent is sincere.

And yes, I have said people dont like change - especially as they get older. Extending that thought though of people leaving after a big change - to me - that has far less of an impact overall from the people who quietly leave, because changes are not made. Or there isnt a place for them and their interests already.

As I have read here before - it is nice that we can still express our opinions - supportive or against things - here at HobbyTalk. The bonus is that we currently have an audience that is willing to listen to us in Verticle Scope. As long as that door is open - I am willing to work to better things.

I am also just one of 20+ people currently working on this project and that number includes more members than VS_Adm staff. And I am not counting the 40 to 50 other members who made posts when no one was listening or were censored by previous owners and moderators.

As long as we are moving forward and I think we are. We are making progress.

I want to thank MFR for his work putting all this together. Something like this wasn't going to be easy and he's handled it very well.

So thank buddy.

I think once the changes are implemented, most will probably realize how logical they will be. More reorganizing than wholesale site changes. I'm actually looking forward to it.

Never seen it yet that new management doesn't want to tinker. I'm pretty darn happy with what I got. I'll look at the changes when I get a chance and input my two cents.

1. I wouldn't be objectionable to dioramas have their own heading. But if it's going to screw something up beyond repair before June 17 - 18 ? DON'T ! ! !
2. LEAVE THE SPELL CHECK ALONE !
3. I can see the reasoning behind the new categories. (Refer to item #1.)
4. If this is going to screw thing up as bad a the HWC Beta Test? DON'T DO IT ! ! !

Best untaken advice I can give is.... "If it works? Don't fix it."

Rather than Vertical Scope just going in and start tinkering around themselves - they reached out to KITT and I first. In turn, we are getting input from you guys on what we had seen noted before.

1, 3 & 4) What happens on June 17 & 18?

2) I am not sure what your reference to the spell check is about, but there are no plans to make changes there.

One of my first questions to VS about making changes - was how it would impact the current posting membership and preservation of the main sections on diecast cars and where you like to post the most. At most a diecast cars section would move one layer in the file system depending on the vote outcome, but automatic redirects will keep subscriptions, searches and notiifcations consistent and constant. This also applies to any threads or forum sections that are moved or renames.

The overall changes are not really designed to 'fix' anything- only tweak what is already there. The rest is around expansion to attract new membership in new diecast vehicle interest areas and maintain the overall membership base long term.

Sure would be nice to also hear from KITT and VS in this mix of opinions rather than a one man show.
