Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes: Die Cast Forum Restructure Planning Poll #1

This poll is a multi-choice format. You can vote for one or more of any of the listed choices based on your interest level or activity within a section.

As noted in the introduction thread the first 4 questions are the quick survey. There you can vote to make changes or not make changes or if you just want to go with the flow.

The next 5 questions focus on how to introduce the other desired diecast types. At the front end of the overall die cast section or as a new sub forum in the revised die cast (cars) forum in poll question 19 and 20 of part 1.

The next group of questiongs focuses on the HWs and MBs posts that can be found in the Collecting, Vintage and International sections as well as the single HW and MB sections.

Similiarly bring JL GL and RC to look similar (cleaner) to HW and MB in the listings and structure.

As I see it -

Being that we already have in place very "general-whatever-else" all inclusive forums such as

Diecast Collecting,

International Diecast,

and the Vintage die cast sections...there is no need for all these "sub-form" additions imo.

Most of them would just be hanging up there at the top of the page with its noodle hanging out, collecting cyber dust.

Weeks and weeks will pass by with nary a post to this annoying thing you gotta look at every time...meanwhile the Mother Host to this musty old sub-forum is getting all the action.

And these days "all the action" amounts to only 1-3 post a week in them anyway.

This can be avoided by just keeping these three very generalized forums mentioned above for "all the rest".

No disrespect intended, but I go to sites like Dicast Speedzone...

and there's a separate specail category for every type of diecast that has ever existed.....and THEN some.

I counted a mind boggling 49 or 50 separate forums!
Average threads per, are a scant 8 to maybe 30...and I'm talking threads, not posts.

Just gives me such a ghost town feeling like I'm on Nevada US Route 50.
Known as the Loneliest Road in America. We're talking 200+ miles between nowhere and noplace.
That road had more traffic as a Pony Express Trail in the 19th Century.

Anyway, I'm sure it wont go that much overboard.

Just consolidate the two chase threads, loose the Jada, Muscle Machines, and Ertl,
and call it done for the most part.

All nice and neat. tidy, and simple.

`

I understand your view point and concerns, but get lost in the supportive points you make. To me the available changes listed would actually eliminate all of those you mention - including the ghost town feel..

But, to help me better understand your viewpoint - especially your "hanging at the top of the page" comment.

Can you tell me where you log into the forum at? Meaning is it a particular forum section, the main page, a specific thread? New posts or active topics?

On the other hand the changes you do list as being in support of - are the same changes other members are voting in support of. And they are the same ones other members have posted about or requested as a change previously - that I found in reading posts over the past 3 years. And in researching other posts and topic trends since becoming a moderator for HobbyTalk.

1. These "sub-forums"...wouldn't they be at the top of another pre-existing page?
I still have trouble/lack of interest in understanding computer language...my fault.

2. I try not to log out EVER because everytime I do, it still makes me create a new password.
Takes me a good hour because my computing device seems to be from 1989.

Yes, as of yesterday at least, seems like most are thinking what I'm thinking.
But to base any *real changes*, should changes be made on just one or two votes?

Curious on you/alls thinking as I meantioned in another thread. I go there now.

If I am following you correctly you just stay at what ever page you were on when you take a break from HobbyTalk. So re phrasing my question to ask - do you have a favorites button for HobbyTalk in your tool bar at the top of the page - and where does that take you if you do? Or do you just go back a page to see the thead titles each time you come back ot HobbyTalk?

2) No, the sub forums would not be at the top of the thread list. The first page of HobbyTalk will either show Diecast Cars or Diecast Vehibles. When you click on there you will see the diecast sections like you do now. Any subforums will show up underneath the section title as a seperate link. Only the most recent post made in a section will be at the top of the individual page. If I am following the platform system correctly the section title is just like another sub forum link and will take you to those group of threads.

1) I will go and check your systems settings for password resets and get back to by PM if needed. You should not have to be resetting your password each time you log out.

Low votes will be vetted by the work group to see if they fit in with other questions that did receive more votes of support for a best fit - under the first oveall choice or under the second overall choice of only the top votes. Under the later - if a low vote item - doesnt enhance another change then logically there is no reason to implement it. There are also places to vote for keeping a section in place as is and not making any changes.

I just usually leave my computer at "DieCast", or sometimes at a thread.
Then I'll just refresh wherever I was or want to go...if that makes sense.

2. I'm sure my limited computer vocabulary makes it hard for others to understand..ha.
I thought a sub-forum (1st. time I've heard this term btw) would look like how you now have you announcements at the top under a couple diciest collecting threads.
So I'm probably again, mixed up due to my lack of `puter lingo.

You have got it now. When you click to open or refresh the diecast page the visual changes you would see would be additional sub forums listed under most of the section titles already there. Right now there is only one. It is in the 1:43 scale section for apson distributors.

I have also had to learn the VS terms for when they talk to us and how things are called here already. There is quite an overlap and it makes it hard to keep the work groups up to speed and now you guys informed and still stay straight with VS as to what is going to be requested. As I keep noting - HobbyTalk is a different diecast forum than most others already. The goal is to keep that feel about the current board and also bring in VS adms other interest areas at the same time.

You guys who are willing to ask the questions are helping others understand better as we go along so keep them coming - if you still have any. And anyone with remaining questions or concerns are encouraged to post them. I will not have as much time during the week to get to them, but will try my best to squeeze in additional times to answer questions as they appear.

I have to go back and amend my response about the sub forums. I was thinking ahead in the planning process that you would be clicking into a sub forum link instead of the section title - like it is now set up in the RC Off Roading Ssection. (The diecast section is currently not set up that way.)

So currently, if you click on a section title in diecast - the sub forums would be listed at the top - above the threads as the system is arranged in diecast now - just like the announcement thread is and an expressed concern of lummox.

The restructure intent though is for the title link to go to a sub forum page - with no threads showing below them. Only the most recent thread in each sub forum would be showing.

A sub forum link with the same wording as the section link title will skip over the sub forum listings page and take you directy to the threads only page for that topic with no additional sub forums showing above them. Only the stickies and and any current announcement.

This was one of the other specific concerns expressed by VS_Adm in their input to us.

Sorry for me missing that needed step change previously.

I personally type hobby talk on my browser (firefox right now), I then hit forums and go to diecast (I do go to the other forums on occasion tho). I like the idea of sub forums within the main subject forum, they might not get as much traffic as the main one but, they are valuable for info and pics for what they are about, which is what the hobby is all about!!

O/T, I love the title "Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes"!! Are you a Bowie fan??

It goes back the photos photos photos work group. I had in mind using Bowie's Ch-ch-ch-changes there and one of the members posted photos photos photos as the section name as reference to closets closets closets from Modern Family and it all just clicked together.

I have two preferred ways of getting into the boards.

As a member, I do what you describe above, but I created a favorites button in the top menu bar directly to the photo photos photos section - saving a few log in steps along the way.

As a moderator, I then use the New Posts button in the HobbyTalk top menu bar. I click directly on it (not any of the drop down date range options). This takes you to a list of all the new posts throughout HobbyTalk - not just those in diecast. So it may not work for the purely diecast collector as you have to scroll thru a lot of those posts from other sections. (I like readiing them though! Especially the customizing and modeling ones as they overlap well with customs and dio work in diecast. Plus there are some amazingly skilled builders in both the sci fi and modeling forums. For the car purists the slot car section post are the ones for you!)

After you read the first post you opened from the New Post list, you can then use the forum jump button to take you to the rest of the new threads in that section. And then use the new posts button again.
